Space X releases Starlink Mini for backcountry satellite internet

SpaceX has introduced the Starlink Mini, a new compact satellite internet device that will be a boon to overlanding and vehicle-based explorations – for a price. The Starlink Mini aims to offer connectivity for backpackers, van lifers, overlanders, and other outdoor enthusiasts, promising reliable internet access even in the most remote locations.

Unlike its predecessors, the Starlink Mini integrates the Wi-Fi router directly into the dish, which is roughly the size of a thick laptop. This innovation allows the device to be powered efficiently by a standard USB power bank, making it highly portable and convenient for those constantly on the move. Weighing just 2.43 pounds and with an IP67 rating, the Mini is protected against dust and rain, ensuring durability in diverse environments.

Elon Musk, SpaceX CEO, highlighted the potential of the Starlink Mini, noting its ease of setup and efficiency. The device consumes significantly less power than previous models, requiring only 20-40W on average. This makes it possible to operate the Mini dish for two to three hours using a typical 27,650mAh power bank, or over an hour with smaller, more common portable batteries.

For overlanders and vehicle-based adventurers, the Starlink Mini is a significant improvement. I’ve had my Starlink device for about a year, and while I’ve enjoyed it, having to set up the router and lug around the large device is a bit of a pain.

The new compact design will make it much easier to set up and transport, and the low power consumption make it ideal for those who rely on solar generators or need to conserve battery power. With the ability to deliver speeds over 100Mbps, adventurers can stay connected, whether they’re deep in the wilderness or traversing isolated landscapes.

Starlink Mini Specs

In the United States, the Starlink Mini is available as an add-on to existing Residential plans. Priced at $599, the Mini kit is $100 more than the standard dish, and an additional $30 per month is required for the Mini Roam service, which provides up to 50GB of mobile data each month.

Starlink Mini Specs

The Mini is already available without data or speed caps for users in countries like Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Panama, although in-motion and ocean use are restricted.

SpaceX aims to lower the price of Starlink services globally, prioritizing regions where internet access has been either prohibitively expensive or entirely unavailable. In high-usage areas like the US, the initial higher price point for the Starlink Mini reflects the additional demand it places on the satellite network. For now, that means we pay a premium for the device and service.
